The herdy Woolympics at Grasmere Sports & Show
Sunday 28 August 2011
Following fantastic feedback from our Knit-Along on Grasmere village green in 2010, we did it again. This year we got sporty with our needles at the famous Grasmere Sports Day on 28 August. Amidst the fell racing and Cumberland & Westmorland wrestling, Juliet Bernard – Editor of The Knitter magazine pitched in with a team of volunteers and helped everyone master the knitting basics. Herdy lovers have created some fantastic hoodies for herdies, and this year sportswear was added to their wardrobe!
We shared a tent with local storyteller Taffy Thomas, who spun some fine herdwick-themed yarns which kept the kids entertained. Meanwhile Ben the drystone waller trained up some new recruits, and Mary B of Grasmere won the speed knit contest.
If you’ve got the knitting bug, how about making a cushion from British Wool for 2012 Olympic athletes? We teamed up with the Woolsack project, and our Woolympic knit-along was an official ‘Stuffing Station’ for finished cushions. But there’s no rush – the final deadline isn’t until March 2012. See woolsack.org for free patterns and details of future stuffing events.
